Abridged History of the 10th Age
|Size: 290,000||Government: Mercantile Compact||Militia: Vast navy, the White Staves|
Both an island and a huge city, Ninfa is the mercantile and governmental center of the Trident Isles. Settled by Harashi and Ishtrian colonists in the middle of the Eighth Age, the people there speak Trident Khemri as do most islanders. This has also had an effect on the architecture of Ninfa, which has many slender minarets and domed towers.With a huge deepwater port, most ships traveling the Trade Sea make a stop on this island to resupply and unload some of their wares. Indeed, many merchant-men travel only TO Ninfa and allow others to buy their goods and travel from there. Thus, while the living population is around 290 thousand, transitory population boosts it to nearly 400 thousand when the season is right.
The city is divided into several major districts; The Harbor District borders the sea throughout the city, the North Slums are beyond the Coingate road near the North Harbor. The Warehouse District is southwards of that, followed by the Nobles District. Beyond Harborgate Road is the Guild District and, continuing clockwise, is the Temple District up near the city wall. Further north is the Merchant’s District and beyond the wall in the north is the Outer Slum.
The government is run by a council composed of representatives from the three major guilds that control the isles and the Trade Sea. These are the Afasen College, the Ivory Coin Traders, and the Guild of the Open Palm. Only the Afasen College is actually headquartered in Ninfa. They are the most influential member of the compact, and their actual leaders are always present for meetings of the council. The other two guilds send representatives to the compact.
