Abridged History of the 10th Age
Autobiography, Sun-Maiden Julea II, 10th Age
Called Harp-joy in Varan, the elf-kingdom of Iiriem is located on the western edge of the Vale-lands. Many of the elves of the Vales are actually from Iiriem, the closest major elven settlement.
As a kingdom, Iiriem is one of the weaker elven states, barely able to protect itself. The kingdom relies on the old wards that were created during the Plague years in order to defend it’s territory. In times of war, the Spellsingers and wizards of Harpjoy walk from stone to stone and speak the secret words that obscures the roads and confuses travelers and armies alike.
Cities and Settlements
Iiriem is ruled over by an aged noble line that came to power some time during the Eighth Age. The elves of Iiriem claim their descent from the ancient forest of Greatwood(which has been divided by time and cataclysm into lesser forests like the Rootwood and the Forest of Iiriem) and thus their traditions go back into the mists of time.
The Lordship of Iiriem is passed hereditarially down both male and female lines, the power always resting in the true descendant of the last king. The Lords and Ladies of Iiriem belong to the Varsinainen line. This direct line of descent has caused many problems in the past, including but not limited to occurrences such as bastard children and younger brothers attempting to supplant the so-called True Heir. The most recent of these manifestations is that of the Black Prince of Iiriem, younger brother to the Queen, Lady Rauhaisa.
In the beginning of the Tenth Age, when the Kekale (the Black Prince) was just a young elf-lad, wet behind the ears, he and a group of royal knights confronted and slew the Silverlode Dragon of Iiriem deep in the Sindabras mines near Poinon. Since that day, Kekale has been pressuring the nobles to allow HIM to ascend to Lordship of Iiriem. Nearly a century ago, in X.433, Kekale and his retinue abruptly left Iiriem in anger over the king’s repeated desires to adhere to ancient tradition and name Rauhaisa Lady of Iiriem.
