Caruel

Caruel was one of the two powerful northern empires of the Sixth Age. Ruled by the warrior-prince Tashbet after he fell out with his brother, Caruel was in a state of almost constant war with the older Soloth. In current day, Caruel is a haunted land of empty cities and abandoned plains; unlike the ruins of Soloth in which men still dwell, it is said that there is something unwholesome about Caruel and its lands are said to be frequented by unclean spirits.

People avoid Caruel if they have the option, and trade routes tend to bend around the former Imperial borders. The region with the most evil rumors is called the Field of Lamentation, where a great battle was supposedly fought between the armies of Soloth and Caruel and where the Caruelians were badly defeated, leading to the invasion of much of the western territories.
